Clown Contouring

A Tutorial on the Clown Contouring Technique with pictures. Red nose not included.

What the beep is clown contouring? I hear you ask.  I mentioned this in my recent Contouring For Dummies post, I thought I’d give it a try myself. It’s a technique that makes you look jolly silly, but only for a few minutes.

The premise is that you do your colour correction, contouring, highlighting and blusher in one step before you put your foundation on.

How Amusing!

I used my Makeup Revolution Colour Correction Palette, my dark Stila concealer, an orange Stila cream blush and my Rosie for Autograph Cream Blush.

clown-contouring-tutorial-pictures-photosHere’s what I applied and where-

  • I used lavender colour correction for brightening cheeks, chin, jawline and forehead
  • Green on any redness, by my nose and on my chin
  • Orange under my eyes to blank out any blue discolouration
  • Highlighter by my eyes, under my eyes, under the brow, down the length of my nose and on the tip,
  • Darker than my skin tone concealer in a strip under the fullness of my cheek, down the sides of my nose and across the very top of my forehead
  • A lot of coral blusher on the apples of my cheek

So you’re not just randomly colouring in your face to look like a  clown. There is method behind the madness.

Half face clown/ Half foundation

Then apply your usual foundation. I used a flat top foundation brush and stippled the foundation on top of the crazy colours. Then I used a blending sponge to buff in and blend into corners. Or you can use your fingers.  Don’t swirl or rub your brush wildly, more press the foundation on gently.

Foundation done

Then the rest of the makeup as usual.

clown-contouring-tutorial-pictures-photos Im actually really impressed with the results, with my cheeks especially.

I did look like I was wearing a lot of makeup. I quite like that look though. Why be natural?  You need to spend a bit longer blending you clown contour obviously, but I’m no expert and I managed. It was pretty quick to do all in all, because the colour layer is just slapped on roughly. And it makes you look hilarious, it’s fun!

I’ll definitely start putting my blusher on before my foundation in future, my cheeks looked really nice. I always have problems getting blusher just right, it’s often patchy or over the top, this technique gives a nice blended colour.

After my clown contouring experiment I looked bright, awake and glowy. I’d had a good laugh doing it too. What’s not to love?

      1. Thank you. I’m not even that good at blending. All the different colours just sort of disappear into the foundation, it’s cool x

I love this – I’m useless at knowing what to do with make-up and contouring is something that is completely beyond me but this tutorial is so helpful at indicating what to do where. Love the end result too.
